KITCHEN STYLING TIPS

As October arrives and we move indoors seeking warmth and comfort, the kitchen, the heart of many homes, is not a place to be overlooked. Read our kitchen styling tips for creating a practical yet beautiful space.

Functionality must be the most important thing in a kitchen. It is a busy space with little room for wasted items. It is crucial to understand this when styling your kitchen. Choose carefully what you want on display (preferably beautiful and functional items) and what can go out of site in a draw or cupboard.

Storage can so often be limited in a kitchen; this can be problematic for many people, but beautiful storage solutions are easy to find. Putting food in Kilner jars is not only more stylish that plastic packets but also keeps food considerably fresher for longer. One of our most popular requests is for vintage enamel kitchen jars, again these are useful and beautiful, they come in wonderful colours too which is a great way to inject some colour into a kitchen.

Getting colour into a kitchen is important. Fabrics can be an easy way to do this. A cushion is a welcome comfort at a kitchen table. Tea towels can also bring a splash of colour. Tea towels are a classic example of something that can be functional and beautiful, seek out a tea towel that is stylish and brings you joy, not just the first one you see at a supermarket. Tablecloths are also an easy way to change the feel of a space, different patterns and colours will be useful at different times of day and year.

Sentimental items often find themselves in the kitchen, a child’s painting on the fridge or apron gifted by a friend. Finding ways to elevate these items can help to avoid clutter. Frame and mount the child’s painting and hang it on the wall, source beautiful hooks for the apron to hang on.

We are firm believers that things are to be used and loved, never shut up in a cupboard for best. Displaying items can be a lovely way to see and appreciate them every day. Hang plates, put utensils in your favourite pot, display vases and glasses on shelves, hang your beautiful mugs from hooks (our favourite mugs are the colourful creations by Miranda Berrow!) Coloured glass is great on display as the light will reflect beautifully throughout the room.

Everyday kitchen items can also be enhanced stylishly. Keep fruit in ceramic bowls or baskets, butter in a beautiful butter dish, bread in stylish bread-bins, water in the fridge in you favourite jugs, herbs in a terracotta pots, stack cookery books with lovely book ends. There are endless opportunities to make your kitchen more functional and beautiful just take the time to play around with different options and see what works best for you in your home.
