OPALINE GLASS

As you probably already know we simply love French glass, amongst which, for us, nothing really beats Opaline. Also known as "Opal glass" or "Milk glass,” this beautiful technique was first crafted towards the end of the C18 in France where it was seen to imitate the appearance of fine porcelain, with a milky, opaque appearance almost resembling that of semi-precious opal gemstones – hence the name!

This delicate glassware quickly gained popularity throughout Europe and beyond, becoming a staple of elegant tableware, decorative objects, and lighting fixtures. We particularly love it for its soft, translucent quality which diffuses light beautifully, creating an almost ethereal glow.

Artisans began to paint on its smooth surface, whilst later C19 glass makers mastered the art of moulded techniques which further heightened the popularity of Opaline, as mass produced ‘Pressed Opaline’ became readily available. Opaline glassware comes in a variety of colours ranging from classic white and pastel hues to vibrant shades of blue, green, pink, and turquoise. The glass can be opaque or slightly translucent, depending on the desired effect.

French Opaline glass is a highly skilled and labour-intensive process that requires significant precision in its creation. Artisans begin by melting a mixture of silica sand, soda ash and lime in a furnace. Once the molten glass reaches the desired consistency, it is carefully shaped and blown by hand or moulded into various forms using a variety of traditional techniques. After shaping, the glass is cooled slowly in a temperature-controlled kiln ensuring durability and stability. Additional layers of coloured glass or enamel are applied to achieve the desired hue and decorative effects. Finally, the glass is polished to it’s familiar smooth, lustrous finish.

French Opaline glass holds significant decorative value, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to any interior space. We like to add it to spaces that require softening with delicate pieces and particularly love gathering together a collection of various sized vases with a similar tonal palette…

Original pieces crafted by renowned glassmakers such as Baccarat, Clichy, and St. Louis command premium prices reflecting their enduring appeal and historical significance. There is a timeless quality about Opaline which makes it's aesthetic appeal a true favourite amongst collectors like us!!
