VALLAURIS POTTERY

Nestled in the picturesque region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in south-eastern France lies the charming town of Vallauris (delightfully close to our home in Cotignac). While this quaint town may not be as well-known as some of its more famous neighbours on the French Riviera, it has earned a reputation as a haven for pottery enthusiasts (like us!) and collectors alike. Vallauris pottery is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and rich history.

Vallauris’s pottery tradition can be traced back over two thousand years to the Roman occupation of the region. During this time, Vallauris was known for producing utilitarian pottery such as amphorae, storage jars, and tiles. Vallauris pottery gained international recognition and acclaim in the 20th century, largely thanks to a group of talented artists and potters who set up their studios in the town. Among them was the renowned artist Pablo Picasso, who played a pivotal role in bringing Vallauris pottery into the spotlight.

In 1946, Picasso visited Vallauris for an exhibition of his artwork. During his stay, he discovered the local pottery studios and was captivated by the craft. Picasso quickly became deeply involved in pottery making, collaborating with local potters to create a wide range of ceramic pieces. His presence in Vallauris catapulted the town into the international art scene and made Vallauris pottery highly sought after by collectors.

Vallauris pottery encompasses a wide range of techniques and styles, making the captivating ceramics we love. One of the standout features of Vallauris pottery is its vibrant and colorful glazes which we are always drawn to! Artisans often experiment with bold and unconventional colour palettes, resulting in pottery that is both visually striking and unconventional. The glazing techniques, combined with the expertise of the potters, give each piece a one-of-a-kind quality which is what we are always on the look out for.

Vallauris pottery encompasses a wide range of items, from functional pieces to decorative art. Some of the most popular Vallauris pottery items include plates, cups and platters, vases and jugs, sculptural pieces, wall tiles and murals.

Vallauris pottery is a testament to the enduring power of art and craftsmanship. From its humble beginnings as a centre for utilitarian pottery to its transformation into a hub of artistic expression, Vallauris has left an indelible mark on the world of ceramics. Its diverse styles, intricate techniques, and historical significance continue to captivate art lovers and collectors worldwide. So, the next time you come across a piece of Vallauris pottery at The Boule-in, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and creativity that have made it a timeless treasure!
