The term "barbotine" comes from the French word for "slip" or "mud."

Barbotine is a term used to describe a type of decorative ceramic technique. This technique involves applying a liquid clay slip or paste to the surface of a ceramic object before firing. This can be done either freehand or using moulds to create raised designs on the surface of the ceramic piece, giving a 3D effect. Once the barbotine decoration is applied, the ceramic piece is typically fired in a kiln to a high temperature, causing the clay to harden and the slip to fuse with the surface. This results in a durable and visually appealing decorative effect.

The slip is often contrasting colours from the base clay, creating the interesting and colourful designs which we are always drawn to when we come across them brocanting.

Barbotine has been used in various ceramic traditions throughout history, including ancient Greek and Roman pottery, revived and made popular amid the decorative arts of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. It continues to be employed by contemporary ceramic artists and potters as a means of adding texture, pattern, and visual interest to their creations.
